The whole google searching swfs thing

I woke up inside the echo chamber this morning with 1800 blog posts and news stories about google now being able to search swfs. My first reaction was a big yawwwn, I stopped putting my content in swfs almost a decade ago. Reading more about what’s going on, I see that they’ve developed a custom version of the flash player that can view the site as a regular person would. Sounds cool, but I’m seriously skeptical. Part of me thinks maybe this is one of the big payoffs from the acquisition of Macromedia by Adobe (having Adobe throw it’s weight around), but mostly I just think it’s not going to work and I’m going to have to keep doing what I’ve been doing for flash seo…hoping for the best though.

Marketing move I guess :)

I don’t want google to index my SWF, I want google to index my site.

“Marketing move I guess”

Funny you should mention that, because that is exactly what it is, and its exactly what is needed.

Flash devs have known for a long time you can still do SEO in a flash site, even before all this hype about a custom flash player or whatever. The rest of the outside world still believes if you have a flash site you aren’t going to get indexed no matter what. An answer by Yahoo and Google should be convincing enough, even if it is smoke and mirrors.

Now when you’re trying to convince someone that you can do SEO just fine in a Flash site, you just point to the press release and say, “Look, Yahoo and Google say they do it too!”, and just implement the SEO the way you always have been.
