I lost just about every file in my domain

or, “why bartering never pays off in the long run”. I set up a dedicated server about three years ago for a client of mine. In exchange, we agreed I would be able to host my site on the server. Had a good deal, i could install anything I wanted, full access, etc. Eventually, I lost contact with the client, but still had my site on the server, and used it frequently (my blog was hosted on there, email too). Last week they moved their server, and forgot my site was still hosted on there. Well that kinda sucks, I thought, but no big deal, I’ll just call them up grab everything I need, and take it and move it to my own (new) server. Call them up…nope, no go. They can’t find any of my files…no chance of accessing the database for my blog either. Ouch.

I’m hoping I can find some sort of cached feed in google of my old posts to import into the new blog.   Oh well, at least I can try out wordpress now, something I’ve been wanting to do for a while.

Don’t be stupid like me..back up your blog regularly (as wella s anything else you might not be willing to lose).

Sorry for your loss. Hope you are able to recover at least some of it. Archive.org appears to have at least some of your older content (blog).

Am using WordPress myself and have been pretty happy with it. Nice attention to detail, etc.

Good luck!

Dang dude that sucks!
I was looking for the post titled “Flash Designer vs. Flash Developer workflow issues” probably the same day your server went AWOL.

About 2 years ago a number of MM user groups had a similar problem with a host we were receiving free services from. The host went belly up, with whatever backups they had.

Sadly, what I learned was that ‘backups’ that are made by your ISP are only useful if you have them on your own machine and have verified they are good. Just because they create (or claim they do) backups, doesn’t mean they work, or that you will ever get them. There are scenarios where it doesn’t matter how much you plead and beg, the data will not be made available.

Backups are only backups if you have them and have verified them periodically. ISPs may not give them to you (they didn’t make them, they erased them, they are bad, you pay your bills, they pay theirs, they don’t have legal problems, ethical problems, etc.)

Make your own backups! I learned my lesson.

oh…and you get what you pay for in most things in life
