Rich Rodecker’s blog on flash, flex, actionscript, javascript, and php, with a dash of randomness
Flash RIA’s
This post at FlashCanon and this article at designtechnica about 2006′s best of web 2.0 (wow best of 2006 already…its friggin february!) had me all set to write up a “Where are all the RIAs?” post…point being the sexy AJAX apps seem to be getting all the press and visibilty, and maybe rightly so. Then I read this comment on the post at FlashCanon by Keith Peters that put it all in perspective:
I don’t really worry too much about the anti-flash crowd. There is more than enough work out there to keep any decent Flash developer busy 80+ hours per week, and it only seems to be increasing. So they can howl about how horrible Flash is while I’m going to the bank to deposit my checks.
well said. After thinking about it some more, I can only reasonably assume that once Flex really breaks through, which it will, then we will start see more and more serious RIA’s out there.

Or not. For 6 years, all of my work has been deployed on intranets. I don’t see that changing anytime soon.

that’s cool, and i’m sure that will explode even more as well…but I’m just getting the feeling that there really needs to be some high-visibilty, highly usable “general-public” RIAs out there, for the sake of the reputation of the RIA itself.

I love C#, and I’m as religious a MS dev as they come, but I totally want to use Flex 2, its incredibly compelling. The future is definitely richer clients, and Macromedia has been living there for a while. Exciting..

I think Flex 2 will rocks. For now, perhaps not many has yet seen the power of Flex 2 (both developement and client side) as it is still in beta. In time to come, it will be clear whether AJAX , FLEX, or er..WPF will win this race

Check out http://www.fidelitylabs.com. and Egg Bank. My group is working hard to get our big clients on the RIA track in new and existing web apps.
Yes, most of the work faces internally, but more and more we’re looking at public facing delivery of these types of guided processes and consumer tools (calculators, charting and such).

When it comes to Flash RIA’s here’s our best effort to date. This application has been doing a *lot* of business reliably and robustly every day for the last 2 years.

I’m looking to do a personal project, but my ideas have been burned out due to work.
I’m thinking about doing an Image Editor or a SQL Designer, but I’m definitely up for suggestions.
